Maria Montessori was one of the first women doctors in Italy. She developed the Montessori method based on her extensive research and observations of children in their own environments. She started the first Montessori school in Rome in 1907!

Montessori classrooms are mixed age groupings of 3-year age ranges, 0-3, 3-6…, where the youngest children have older role models and mentors, while the older friends get opportunities to lead and reinforce their own learning by helping others. Just like in a family!
